SDG&E Conducts Wildfire Mitigation & Infrastructure Improvements in Rancho Santa Fe

Wildfire Mitigation & Infrastructure Improvements in Rancho Santa Fe

As part of our commitment to safety and helping build resilient communities in the face of increasing climate and wildfire threats, SDG&E recently kicked off a year-long project to inspect and improve infrastructure in the Rancho Santa Fe area. This work is part of SDG&E’s Wildfire Mitigation Plan, which outlines the programs, projects and safety measures the Company is spearheading to build regional resiliency, strengthen and protect infrastructure, improve situational awareness and data analysis, enhance weather technology, prevent utility-related wildfires and prepare the public for emergencies.

Earlier this year, SDG&E used drones to inspect overhead lines and more than 1,400 power poles throughout Rancho Santa Fe. Based on imagery and data gathered from these inspections, SDG&E will perform improvement work on 250 power poles, approximately half of which will be replaced with fire-resistant steel poles. Construction work will take place in phases to minimize impacts in the community.

In addition to building wildfire resiliency in the Rancho Santa Fe community, the project will also help:

  • Enhance safety and reliability of the distribution system.
  • Improve electric system performance during extreme weather conditions.
  • Reduce cost and environmental impacts for future maintenance activities.

What to expect:

From mid-October 2023 until April 2024, select customers who live or pass through the area can expect:

  • SDG&E and contractor crews and construction equipment.
  • Traffic controls including lane reductions, no parking signs and/or temporary restrictions near work sites for safety, which may cause traffic delays.
  • Construction noise and dust.
  • Temporary service outages in certain instances. Planned outage information can be found at sdge.com/outages.
