At Miramar College in San Diego, students are studying for a new kind of career with booming job opportunities that didn’t exist until a few years ago: they are learning how to fly unmanned aerial systems (UAS) – commonly known as drones.
These future “remote pilots” – as they are called by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) – are able to hone their aviation skills with six top-of-the-line, commercial quality drones, thanks to a donation SDG&E recently made to the college.
As our Aviation Services Program invests in newer technology, we decided to donate our seasoned drones to Miramar’s Remote Pilot Ground School and lab. Locally grown talent who are skilled in flying UAVs are needed right here in our region.
SDG&E was the second utility in the nation to be granted FAA approval to use UAS to conduct aerial assessments of electric facilities.
