To help customers keep their energy costs down, San Diego Gas & Electric has launched a new no-cost, energy efficiency upgrade program for renters and owners of single-family homes. Known as Residential Energy Solutions (RES), the new program has no income restrictions and has the potential to help local families achieve long-term savings on their energy bill.

Eligible customers participating in RES receive free products, such as smart thermostats and HVAC services such as air duct testing and sealing. The goal of the program is to help customers better manage their energy use, lower heating and cooling costs, and achieve zero net energy for their home. A zero net energy building is one where the amount of energy consumed is less than or the same as the renewable energy generated.

“Not only can energy efficiency upgrades help our customers save long term on their energy bills and make their homes more comfortable,” said SDG&E Vice President of Customer Services Dana Golan. “Additionally, reducing energy use can help our region and our state cut greenhouse gas emissions and meet our climate goals.”

Here is a list of available products and services offered by the program:

  • Smart Thermostats that can be controlled remotely from a smart phone app so customers can easily manage their energy use
  • High-efficiency, brushless fan motor, efficient fan control and duct test and seal to help lower cooling and heating costs
  • Low-flow faucet aerators, low-flow shower heads, pipe wrap and thermostat shower valves that help reduce water heating costs

SDG&E has contracted with Synergy Companies to help administer the program. Customers can request an appointment for a home visit from an energy efficiency expert via Synergy’s website or by calling 1-888-272-8394.

Other Energy Efficiency Programs

In addition to RES, SDG&E also offers an energy efficiency upgrade program called Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) for low income renters and homeowners. With ESA, eligible customers may receive the following products and installation at no cost:

  • Smart thermostats
  • Attic insulation
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Door weather-stripping
  • Replacement of qualified appliances such as refrigerators or AC wall units
  • Caulking
  • Minor home repairs
  • Low-flow showerheads

Separately, through the Golden State Rebates program, SDG&E customers can take advantage of incentives of $20-$500 for the purchase of high-efficiency water heaters, smart thermostats and room air conditioners.

Financial Assistance Programs

Financial assistance programs are also available to SDG&E customers who are struggling with overdue balances. The Neighbor-to-Neighbor program, funded entirely by SDG&E shareholder dollars (not ratepayer dollars), provides eligible customers with up to $300 to offset their outstanding bills. The federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers assistance to income-eligible customers that range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on their income, household size and past-due balance.
