Sustainability has become top of mind for businesses. That’s certainly true for The Jamul Village Indian Tribe as they prepared to open their new casino to the public last year. The Tribe, in collaboration with Penn National Gaming, SDG&E and other partners created a truly state-of-the-art facility that sets a new, clean, green standard for the casino industry.
With over 1,700 slot machines, 40 live table games, restaurants, bars and lounges, the Hollywood Casino Jamul - San Diego has excelled in sustainability best practices without compromising the experience of its guests.
Recently, the Hollywood Casino was honored at SDG&E’s 12th Annual Energy Showcase, which recognized local businesses and organizations that are adopting energy efficiency measures to help clean the air we breathe and build healthier communities.
Creating comfort, going green
With a shared commitment to the community and a desire to reduce their carbon footprint by being as sustainable as possible, the Jamul Village Indian Tribe and Penn National Gaming worked hand-in-hand with SDG&E to ensure the 2.2 million square foot space not only met, but exceeded California energy efficiency standards.
The casino, which is less than 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, includes a three-story gaming and entertainment facility of approximately 200,000 square feet and an enclosed below ground parking structure with approximately 1,800 spaces. That’s a lot of energy to manage!
LED lighting in combination with natural light creates a more ambient environment for guests; the highest efficiency air handlers reduce smoke in the air; and the on-site waste water treatment plant uses a five-stage filtration process to produce reclaimed water for toilets and to irrigate their green roof—a large plant installation covering about a quarter of the roof. The green roof not only makes efficient use of the under-utilized space, but also helps to insulate the casino and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Now that’s clean!
