Update on Power Outages Caused by Plane Crash in El Cajon Area

Power Has Been Restored to All Customers in the Area

Electric service has been successfully restored to all customers who lost power Monday evening due to a plane crash in the area of Bostonia / El Cajon.

At its peak, outages affected more than 3,600 customers. SDG&E crews arrived to the scene shortly after the tragic incident and, were able to restore power to the majority of customers with the help of a large-scale generator by Tuesday evening.

Four of SDG&E’s line trucks and 50 crew members were granted access to the site by the authorities early Thursday morning and were able to make necessary repairs to our power lines and infrastructure before 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

We thank our customers for their patience throughout this process, and our thoughts continue to be with the families affected by this accident.

The authorities in charge of investigating Monday evening's plane crash in the Bostonia/El Cajon area have granted SDG&E crews access to the area to begin assessing and repairing damaged power lines. As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night (Dec. 28), SDG&E restored power to all but 7 customers in the affected area.

Impacted customers requiring assistance are encouraged to call 211 San Diego to get connected to local resources and organizations.

As of 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28, SDG&E has restored power to all but 7 customers in the Bostonia/El Cajon area who lost electric service Monday night after a small plane crashed near Mollison Avenue and Pepper Drive. Our crews have been working hard since Monday evening to reroute power and deploy a generator to restore electric service to as many customers as possible.  

Our crews are on standby and ready to begin the necessary repairs once cleared by the authorities. SDG&E is working closely with our public safety partners at the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, the Lakeside Fire Protection District, and San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to the remaining customers.
