Season of Giving: Combating Holiday Hunger with the San Diego Food Bank

From Grandma’s famous family stuffing to your newest Pinterest find, food is one of the defining characteristics of the holiday season. While households sit down for festive meals to celebrate with loved ones, more than 400,000 people will look to the San Diego Food Bank for emergency food to help make ends meet.

Last year, the Food Bank—San Diego County’s largest hunger-relief organization—distributed nearly 22 million pounds of food to those living in poverty and facing food insecurity in the region. With more than 12 percent of the County’s entire population served by the Food Bank, the organization relies heavily upon donations and volunteerism to keep shelves stocked and distributions flowing.

Volunteering to help

This week, members of SDG&E’s External Affairs Team had the opportunity to staff a volunteer shift and earn a $2,500 Sempra Energy Foundation grant for the Food Bank through the energy company’s annual Season of Giving.
