Season of Giving: Tools for School Make a Difference

This holiday season, a group of San Diego Gas & Electric employees came together to give the gift of school supplies to students at Central Elementary School in National City. For the last five years, SDG&E employees, based out of the company’s Kearny Maintenance and Operations District in Kearny Mesa have been striving to “give back” by choosing an organization in their community that they can make a difference in.

This year, the employees, organized by the Kearny Safety Committee, chose to give back to Central Elementary by raising nearly $5,000 to purchase much needed school supplies.

Supplies and Smiles

Earlier this month, the SDG&E volunteers delivered the supplies, filling the cafeteria with crates packed with brand new pens, pencils, reams of paper, notebooks, sporting equipment and most importantly, smiles. The teachers’ lounge was also outfitted with two new microwaves and a coffeemaker.

“There was a heartfelt outpouring of gratitude from the students and teachers,” said Jose Lopez, manager at SDG&E Kearny Operations, who helped raise the funds for the school. “The next day we received hundreds of thank you notes and poster boards from the students, which we have plastered throughout our office and our crew rooms.  Our employees continue to give back to the community, making it rewarding for everyone here at Kearny.”
