Power has been restored to several hundred customers, and crews are staged and ready to begin inspections and restoration efforts in other areas, once it is safe to do so.

Inspections of power lines are the first step in the power restoration process, after a Public Safety Power Shutoff. The inspections will help determine if there is any wind damage. During windy conditions, flying debris or broken tree branches can land on power lines. If damage is found, repairs must be made before power can be restored safely.

Although inspections are currently underway it is difficult to predict how long an inspection might take, given the varied length of each power line, the terrain and whether aerial inspections are required. Some circuits are located in rural, mountainous areas that require a helicopter to inspect. In those cases, wind speeds need to be below 35 mph in order for the helicopter to fly safely.

For the latest update on the number of customers and communities impacted, please sdge.com/ready and the SDG&E Outage Map.

Due to forecasted Santa Ana Winds and elevated fire conditions, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 8 a.m. through 12 p.m. Thursday, December 24, 2020.

We have notified 31,000 customers that they could be impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs. PSPS are done as a last resort to protect public safety and reduce wildfire risk. SDG&E crews and other personnel are on standby to minimize impacts as best as we can if power is shut off. We appreciate our customers’ understanding given the unfortunate timing.

“Public Safety Power Shutoffs are a last resort to protect public safety and reduce wildfire risk, and our employees are dedicated to doing everything we can to minimize impacts should it come to that. We understand the last thing our customers want to hear is that they may lose power given the holiday and COVID pandemic. Our meteorology team is closely monitoring the weather circuit by circuit, and it’s our hope that Mother Nature will cooperate and conditions will change, eliminating or reducing the need for safety power shutoffs. But, we must make sure our customers are prepared,” said Scott Crider, SDG&E’s Chief Customer Officer.
