Power Restored to All Communities Impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Power has been restored to all customers who were impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). Upon restoration of power, all Community Resource Centers have closed down. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding, especially during the Thanksgiving holiday.

SDG&E crews and personnel have worked tirelessly today to inspect power lines and restore power to thousands of customers in areas where winds have calmed and where it was safe to inspect the equipment for damage before restoration. Crews continue to conduct inspections and restoration efforts as areas are determined to be safe.

The Community Resource Center in Potrero has closed. However, the Descanso facility will remain open until 10 p.m. or until power is restored and may have ice, water, snacks, charging for small electronics, up-to-date information, and water trucks for livestock.

Power has been restored to several thousand customers, and crews are staged and ready to continue with inspections and restoration efforts in other areas once it is safe to do so.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs & Power Restoration Efforts

Weather conditions are trending in our favor, and winds are forecasted to continue deceasing throughout the day. SDG&E crews have begun patrolling in areas where winds have calmed, and it is safe for crews to inspect equipment for damage.

Inspections of power lines are the first step in the power restoration process after a Public Safety Power Shutoff. During windy conditions, flying debris or broken tree branches can land on power lines. If damage is found, repairs must be made before power can be restored safely.

Although inspections are currently underway it is difficult to predict how long power restoration might take, given the varied length of each power line, the terrain and whether aerial inspections are required. Some circuits are located in rural, mountainous areas that require a helicopter to inspect. In those cases, wind speeds need to be below 35 mph in order for the helicopter to fly safely

Community Resource Centers are open today, Friday, Nov. 26 in Descanso and Potrero from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., unless conditions change. These locations will remain open until power is restored and may have ice, water, snacks, charging for small electronics, up-to-date information, and water trucks for livestock.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs & Power Restoration Efforts

Public Safety Power Shutoffs have been implemented in portions of the following communities due to critical fire weather conditions, now affecting 3,905 customers:

  • Boulevard
  • Campo Reservation
  • Descanso
  • Jamul
  • La Jolla Reservation
  • Pala
  • Pauma Reservation
  • Pauma Valley
  • Potrero

Power has been restored to several hundred customers today, however, customers should still be prepared for potential outages overnight into Saturday due to changing weather conditions. Crews remain staged and ready to inspect and potentially restore other affected areas once it becomes safe to do so.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs have been implemented in portions of the following communities due to critical fire weather conditions, affecting approximately 4,444 customers.

We recognize how disruptive it can be to lose power and we thank our customers for their patience and understanding as SDG&E continues to monitor weather conditions.

Community Resource Centers will be open in Descanso and Potrero starting at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25.  

The Community Resource Center in Valley Center will open at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25.

Today the National Weather Service (NWS) updated its Red Flag Warning for 

  • San Diego mountains and valleys starting on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 9 p.m. through Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. 

  • Inland Orange County starting Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. through Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. 

SDG&E continues to monitor conditions closely and we are hoping that these critical fire weather conditions do not affect power for our customers and employees hoping to enjoy the holiday with loved ones. 

We know it is always inconvenient to be out of power, especially around the holidays. However, nothing is more important than the safety of the communities we serve. We have notified approximately 53,000 customers that they could be impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs over the Thanksgiving weekend. 

In the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff, Community Resource Centers will be open in certain impacted communities. Customers will be asked to observe safety protocols when visiting Community Resource Centers, such as limiting time spent indoors, wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

The company also advised those who receive PSPS notification to be prepared to activate their personal emergency plans to keep their family, pets and livestock safe. SDG&E will continue to provide customers with updates when there is more information about forecasted weather conditions.

National Weather Service Issues Fire Weather Watch - SDG&E’s Fire Science and Climate Adaptation Experts Closely Monitoring Conditions 

SAN DIEGO, November 22, 2021 –San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is asking customers to prepare for potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) over the Thanksgiving holiday. Today, the National Weather Service issued a Fire Weather Watch from 10 a.m. on Wednesday through 6 p.m. on Friday for inland Orange County and 4 a.m. on Thursday morning through 6 p.m. on Friday evening for San Diego County mountains and valleys.  

“All of us at SDG&E are hoping that critical fire weather conditions do not result in having to shut off power over Thanksgiving so that our customers and employees can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones,” said Kevin Geraghty, SDG&E’s chief safety officer and senior vice president, electric operations.  “Weather conditions change, and we have our team of professionals watching closely.  However, we wanted to let our customers know as early as possible that they could be impacted so they can make alternate holiday arrangements if needed. There is nothing more important to us than the safety of the communities we serve, and our team stands ready to restore power as quickly and safely as possible should PSPS occur.”

In preparation, SDG&E has activated its Emergency Operations Center to monitor conditions 24/7, initiated pre-patrols of equipment located in high fire threat districts (HFTD) and will notify customers who are potentially at risk of PSPS beginning Tuesday morning via phone, text messages and email. Customers who are notified should be prepared to be without power through Saturday, depending on SDG&E’s need and ability to physically inspect equipment during daylight hours prior to re-energizing.  

The company also advised those who receive PSPS notification to be prepared to activate their personal emergency plans to keep their family, pets and livestock safe. SDG&E will continue to provide customers with updates when there is more information about forecasted weather conditions. 

PSPS are recognized by state regulators as an important safety tool of last resort to mitigate fire risk during dangerous weather conditions. A list of areas at risk of PSPS will be available on Tuesday at sdge.com/ready. A network of more than 220 weather stations located throughout SDG&E’s service territory provides grid operators with real-time data on wind, temperature and humidity conditions and help them decide when and whether to de-energize power lines to maintain safety.
