Electric Vehicle Rebates

Good News for Electric Vehicle Shoppers - Get Rebates Upfront!

For San Diego County residents who are looking to buy or lease an electric vehicle (EV), there is now an easier and faster way to get a state-funded rebate for up to $4,500. Get a pre-approved rebate upfront and lower the down payment for a new ride.

Before heading out to shop for an EV, you can apply online for a rebate to be used at participating dealerships. Dealers can apply the rebate directly to the price of an eligible vehicle at the time of purchase, so there is no more waiting for the rebate check.

Rebates range from $900 for zero-emission motorcycles to between $1,500 and $4,500 for fully electric and plug-in hybrid passenger cars. The amount of the rebate for cars varies depending on the vehicle make and model and the applicant’s household income.

The Rebate Now pilot program was recently announced by the Center for Sustainable Energy, which administers the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project on behalf of the California Air Resources Board. If the pilot is successful in San Diego County, it will be rolled out statewide.

But Wait, there’s more!

If you are a credentialed teacher or first responder (firefighter, police officer, lifeguard, emergency medical technician) who live and work in communities served by SDG&E, you are eligible for an additional $1,000 EV rebate under our Champions for Clean Air program.

Similar to the state-funded Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, you apply for the rebate through an online application. Approved applicants are issued a voucher for use at participating dealerships. Get more information here.

In addition to rebates, the federal government also offers $2,500–$7,500 in tax credits for those who buy or lease EVs. The credit amount depends on the vehicle’s battery capacity.

So what does all this add up to? $10,000 or more in discounts to make driving an EV a very attractive choice.
