Beacon Award

A Beacon for Change: Institute for Local Government Honors SDG&E as Partner of the Year

Many hands are on the deck in our region when it comes to building a more sustainable future. Our local cities have been working hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the energy efficiency of their facilities, and for many years, we have been partnering with them on these efforts.

Recently, our collaboration with local municipalities was recognized with a Beacon Program Partner of the Year award from the Institute or Local Government. The institute is the nonprofit research and education affiliate of the League of California Cities, the California State Association of Counties and the California Special Districts Association.

The honor was bestowed on our local government partnership group at the California League of cities annual conference in Long Beach last month.

“For more than a decade, SDG&E has supported our cities and counties, helping them save money and energy,” said Karalee Browne, manager, Institute for Local Government.

Working Together to Create Healthier, More Efficient, & Vibrant Communities

The Beacon program creates a framework to help local governments set goals, document progress, share best practices to create healthier, more efficient and vibrant communities. SDG&E worked with San Diego and Chula Vista to implement innovative energy efficiency projects and unique community initiatives including:

  • Energy efficiency retrofits of municipal facilities and operations
  • Community education and outreach to inform customers about opportunities to improve efficiencies
  • Climate action planning for each municipal partnership to help meet energy saving goals
  • Facilitating collaboration between municipalities to build support for regional energy efficiency programs
