Wheel Fun Coming Up at San Diego Auto Show: Electric Vehicle Day to Feature Test Drives of Latest Plug-In Models

Looking for new wheels for the new year that are quiet, smooth, powerful and generate little or no pollution? Mark your calendar for the San Diego International Auto Show, which kicks off on Jan. 1 and goes through Jan. 5!

The latest plug-in models on the market will be on display during the five-day event. One of the days of the Auto Show – Thursday, Jan. 2 – will be designated as Electric Vehicle Day.

On EV Day, EV test drives will take place in front of the San Diego Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The test drives are open to the public and do not require admission to the Auto Show. The first 50 people to participate in test drives will receive free admission to the Auto Show. In addition, all test drive participants will be automatically entered to win a $1,000 rebate toward a purchase or lease of a new EV; twenty-five rebates will be awarded.

“San Diego Gas & Electric is proud to be a part of EV Day and the San Diego Auto Show,” said Brittany Syz, SDG&E’s director of clean transportation. “We invite everyone to come out and learn about the many benefits of making the switch to an electric vehicle, such as saving money on fuel and maintenance, and state and federal incentives that can offset the purchase price.”

There are now more than 45 plug-in EV models on the market from every major car manufacturer, including new, more affordable models that have a range of more than 300 miles on a single battery charge – enough to drive to LA and back.

Ener-G Station: The Showcase for Plug-In Vehicles

Throughout the five-day Auto Show, SDG&E will also be staffing a special area called the Ener-G Station to showcase an array of EVs for different lifestyles. SDG&E’s Clean Transportation team will be on-hand to provide information on special pricing plans for charging EVs. SDG&E offers a plan that allows residential customers to charge their EVs for the equivalent of about 75 cents per gallon.

Curious about where EV chargers are getting built and fuel savings comparisons between driving gas and electric? The SDG&E team will have the answers. SDG&E has developed an online tool to help car shoppers estimate how much they can save if they drive electric, and the company is also working to expand the charging network to schools, parks, beaches, the airport, the port, Park & Ride lots, and commercial and industrial facilities.

The Ener-G Station will also host a booth staffed by the California Center for Sustainable Energy, which administers California’s EV rebate program. Its staff will provide information on how the incentive program works and the benefits of owning an EV.

Over 50,000 EVs are currently on local roads in our region, and the number of people and businesses making the switch to electric vehicles continues to grow.
