Second Chance: A Youth Garden of Opportunity

Making a meaningful impact on our community takes working with organizations and community leaders who share in our efforts to make our community better and improve the lives of our customers. One such organization is Second Chance, who has transformed an empty parking lot into the Second Chance Youth Garden.

The Youth Garden is more than a garden – it is an innovative space that teaches formerly incarcerated youth the skills they need employment while providing locally grown, healthy food options for families. The garden also provides environmental benefits, increasing green space and minimizing the heat island effect in this urban community.

We were proud to join Second Chance today, January 11, for a series of media segments with the San Diego’s CW6. The interviews helped to raise awareness of how the program creates an opportunity for teens who have faced real challenges in life to build the skills they need to enter the workforce. At SDG&E, we’re proud to support the Second Chance Youth Garden, which has positively impacted the lives of more than 250 youth since 2013.

You can support Second Chance by purchasing produce from the youth garden at Fair @ 44, a weekly City Heights open-air market at the corner of Fairmount Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard.
