SDG&E Activates Reduce Your Use Rewards Program During Heat Wave

SDG&E Activates Reduce Your Use Rewards Program During Heat Wave

With forecasted record temperatures expected to drive higher-than-normal electric demand, SDG&E is activating our Reduce Your Use rewards program Friday, July 6, between 2-6 p.m. and urging residents who voluntarily enrolled in the program to conserve energy.  While we have secured enough resources to meet the demand, energy conservation is always a good habit.

Reduce Your Use program participants can earn a bill credit of $.75 per kilowatt hour saved or $1.25 credit per kilowatt hour saved with enabling technology, like a smart thermostat.

If you have not signed up for the Reduce Your Use rewards program, it’s not too late to join. Once you are enrolled, you will receive notifications via email, text messages or phone calls, when our demand response programs get activated.

Tips to Reduce Energy Use

  • Use a ceiling or portable fan instead of your air conditioner if possible.
  • Run your A/C early in the morning to pre-cool your home. Close blinds, shades or drapes to block out the sun's heat.
  • Run major appliances early in the morning or late at night.
  • Unplug TV, cable, DVD or gaming devices when idle, or use a smart power strip to eliminate phantom power.
  • Turn off pool pumps between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Santa Ana-like Fire Danger During Heat Wave

Along with the extreme heat, there is the potential of extreme fire danger – especially in the backcountry. Our meteorologists forecast single-digit humidity, 30-40 miles per hour wind through inland areas, and a chance of thunderstorms.

In light of these conditions, we have pre-staged contract firefighting crews and engines in high fire risk areas, and our AirCrane helitanker is available for emergency response. In addition, we have cancelled grid maintenance work in fire-prone areas.
