On Tuesday morning, moderate Santa Ana winds began to subside throughout San Diego and Orange Counties. However, a wind advisory continues to remain in effect for inland portions of San Diego County through 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 31).
Over the course of this Santa Ana, SDG&E’s network of weather stations measured peak wind speeds ranging from 54mph in Boulder Creek to 64 mph in Sill Hill.
Due to improved weather conditions, SDG&E customers are no longer at risk of losing power due to a PSPS. According to our meteorology team, high fire risk weather conditions have passed. We have communicated the “all clear” to customers in the affected area.
While SDG&E has not had to initiate a PSPS since 2021, customers are reminded to be prepared and keep safety as a priority. Customers are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts from SDG&E at sdge.com/My Account and download the no-cost Alerts by SDG&E app on Google Play or the App Store to get real-time updates and notifications about potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs in English and Spanish. SDG&E’s Emergency Operations Center remains activated and continues to closely monitor Santa Ana winds and fire weather conditions that may require us to shut off power for public safety in localized areas.
San Diego County is currently still not under a Fire Watch or Red Flag Warning; however, Inland areas of the region continue to be under a wind advisory, that began on Monday evening and will now expire at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Throughout the weekend, SDG&E’s network of weather stations measured peak wind speeds ranging from 48 mph in La Posta to 63 mph in Sill Hill.
While SDG&E has not de-energized any circuits at this time, customers are encouraged to continue to be prepared in the event that SDG&E needs to initiate a PSPS as a last resort to protect their community from utility-related fire risk.

Out of an abundance of caution, SDG&E has notified ~1,110 customers that the Company may need to initiate Public Safety Power Shutoffs during the coming days as a last resort. These notifications are made via outbound dialer calls, text messages and emails.

SAN DIEGO, October 27, 2023 –San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is asking customers to prepare for high winds and potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) this weekend. Per the National Weather Service, Santa Ana winds are expected throughout Orange County and San Diego County starting early Sunday into early Wednesday. Wind gusts are expected to reach 40 mph to 50 mph in some inland areas. While San Diego County is not currently under a Fire Watch or Red Flag Warning, gusty winds are forecasted in localized areas in the mountains and a combination of winds, very low humidity, and multiple days of drying of our vegetation will lead to periods of localized critical fire weather conditions on Sunday and Monday.
To prepare, SDG&E is closely monitoring weather conditions, has initiated pre-patrols of equipment located in high fire threat districts (HFTD) and has begun notifying ~900 customers via phone, text messages and email who may be potentially at risk of a PSPS.
Customers who receive a notification should take steps to be prepared. This includes:
- Reviewing your emergency plan with your household and loved ones.
- Having an emergency kit ready with important supplies such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, and extra chargers. Make sure you consider your households’ unique needs (e.g., important medication or devices for family members with disabilities) in your plans and supplies and don’t forget your pets.

It is important to note that the decision to initiate a Public Safety Power Shutoff to protect homes and communities from utility-related wildfire risk is not made lightly. Data and conditions including weather, wind speeds, vegetation moisture, humidity, observations in the field, information from local fire agencies and others are all monitored and evaluated continuously before a decision is made to initiate a power shutoff.
