Updated Wednesday, Dec. 9, 8:00 a.m.

SDG&E crews and personnel continue to work diligently to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to all remaining customers impacted by this latest wind event. Crews resumed inspections of power lines promptly after sunrise this morning and all of SDG&E’s air assets are currently flying. For the latest updates on estimated restoration times, please visit sdge.com/outagemap. For the latest customer count and communities affected by PSPS, please visit sdge.com/ready.

There are still several circuits/power lines that require inspections before restoration can take place. If damage is found, repairs must be made prior to restoration. Crews will be looking for safety hazards such as downed power lines, debris or tree branches caught in power lines, and broken hardware.

As of about 8 p.m. last night, the number of customers without power due to Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) decreased from a high of about 15,000 to approximately 5,100. Please note, there is currently an unplanned outage impacting customers in the University Heights/ North Park/ Normal Heights/ City Heights/ Chollas Creek/ Oak Park areas that is not part of the PSPS event.

To support affected residents, SDG&E plans to open drive-thru Community Resource Centers today starting at 8 a.m. in Julian, Potrero, Valley Center, Ramona, Warner Springs and Descanso. These facilities will remain open until power is restored and may have ice, water, snacks, charging for small electronics, up-to-date information, handwarmers and other cold weather items.

We recognize losing power is disruptive, particularly during a pandemic when many families are learning and working from home. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these outages.

Updated Tuesday, Dec. 8, 8:50 p.m.

As of about 8:00 p.m. tonight, the number of customers without power due to Public Safety Power Shutoffs has decreased from a high of about 15,000 this morning to approximately 5,100 tonight. Power has been restored to parts of the following communities: Alpine, Boulevard, Campo, Campo Reservation, Descanso, Escondido, La Jolla Reservation, Los Coyotes Reservation, La Posta Reservation, Manzanita Reservation, Pala Reservation, Pauma Reservation, Rincon Reservation, San Pascual Reservation, Santa Ysabel, Santa Ysabel Reservation, Valley Center, Viejas Reservation and Warner Springs.

SDG&E crews and personnel have worked tirelessly today to inspect power lines and restore power to thousands of customers in areas where winds have calmed and where it was safe to inspect the equipment for damage before restoration. Helicopter inspections were not possible today due to unsafe flying conditions- high winds and turbulence. As a result, not all customers impacted by PSPS will have their power restored today because:

  • Daylight is necessary to conduct visual inspections of power lines to determine if there is damage. There are still several circuits/power lines that require inspections before restoration can take place.
  • If damage is found, repairs must be made before restoration can take place. Crews will be looking for safety hazards such as downed power lines, debris or tree branches caught in power lines, and broken hardware.
  • In some areas that have been de-energized, winds are still gusting.

Restoration efforts will resume tomorrow morning. All SDG&E’s air assets are available to assist with inspections, provided it is safe to fly. Inspections of power lines will resume promptly after sunrise tomorrow morning with the focus of trying to safely restore the remaining customers as quickly and safely as possible.

For the latest updates on estimated restoration times, please visit sdge.com/outagemap. For the latest customer count and communities affected by PSPS, please visit sdge.com/ready.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during these outages.

Updated Tuesday, Dec. 8, 5:00 p.m.

We continue to make progress with power restoration. Visual inspections of each impacted circuit are necessary to determine whether there is any wind-related damage before power can be restored in the remaining areas. If damage is found, repairs must be made before power lines can be re-energized safely. No helo patrols were possible today due to unsafe flying conditions, high winds and turbulent conditions. This may may mean customers in some affected areas may not be restored today, until inspections of those lines can be completed. All visual inspections that can be done via foot patrols are continuing. Currently, 6,201 customers remain without power.

For the latest updates on estimated restoration times, please visit sdge.com/outagemap. For the latest customer count and communities affected by PSPS, please visit sdge.com/ready.

Updated Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 10:30 a.m.

Power has been restored to several thousand customers, and crews are staged and ready to begin inspections and restoration efforts in other areas, once it is safe to do so.

Inspections of power lines are the first step in the power restoration process, after a Public Safety Power Shutoff. The inspections will help determine if there is any wind damage. During windy conditions, flying debris or broken tree branches can land on power lines. If damage is found, repairs must be made before power can be restored safely.

Although inspections are currently underway it is difficult to predict how long an inspection might take, given the varied length of each power line, the terrain and whether aerial inspections are required. Some circuits are located in rural, mountainous areas that require a helicopter to inspect. In those cases, wind speeds need to be below 35 mph in order for the helicopter to fly safely.

For the latest update on the number of customers and communities impacted, please sdge.com/ready and the SDG&E Outage Map.

Updated Monday, Dec. 7, at 3:00 p.m.

Due to high winds, we have shut off power for safety to portions of Descanso, Jamul, Santa Ysabel, and Valley Center to approximately 389 customers.

Severe winds and elevated fire conditions have been extraordinarily challenging over the last few weeks resulting in multiple Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events.

We recognize how frustrating these conditions and the impacts they have on the service we provide are. While the last thing any of us at SDG&E want to be telling our customers right now is that we may have to shut off power, catastrophic wildfires have become all too common in California and there’s nothing more important to us than your safety and that of our employees.

The decision to notify you that you could be impacted by PSPS is largely driven by National Weather Service warnings, and we follow regulatory requirements to inform you at different stages of any event. We do not make the decision to shut off power lightly – especially now when many families are learning and working from home while dealing with other difficulties related to the COVID pandemic.

We truly appreciate your patience as we work through these challenging conditions. Many of you have also reached out to express your understanding, including the thousands who have visited a Community Resource Center to pick up supplies and convey your gratitude. Please know that our field and other personnel remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to this next round of Santa Ana Winds.

Updated Sunday, December 6 at 11:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Monday morning through Tuesday night.  SDG&E is urging customers to be prepared for Public Safety Power Shutoffs and has notified approximately 50,483 customers that they could be without power beginning Monday night into Wednesday, depending on the severity of winds and potential damage to the electric system. SDG&E will continue to have its Emergency Operations Center activated to closely monitor conditions 24/7. Our crews remain on high alert and stand prepared to respond as needed to the next round of Santa Ana winds expected to impact our region. With our customers just now recovering from disruptive Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) due to the last Red Flag Warning, we hope Mother Nature will be kind to our region in the coming days and weather conditions improve.

Over the past few days, SDG&E mounted an all hands-on-deck, large-scale effort to aggressively restore power to customers, deploying hundreds of field personnel by foot, vehicle and helicopter to expedite power line inspections needed before lines can be re-energized safely. The majority of customers impacted by PSPS had their power restored either Thursday or Friday, with the final 1,046 customers back in power on Saturday morning.
