Customers Flock to Online Payment Systems for Faster Solar Interconnection

Good bye to snail mail and paper checks!

As more and more residents and businesses choose to install rooftop solar in our region, we have successfully implemented online payment options to make the interconnection process easier and faster.

Over the past two years, about 47,000 customers have taken advantage of our PayPal™ and Braintree™ online payment solutions.

SDG&E was the first utility to offer customers online payment options to connect private rooftop solar. To date, there are more than 143,000 residential and commercial solar installations, totaling more than 1,000 megawatts of capacity, in our service territory (encompassing San Diego County and South Orange County).

How it Works

“The exciting part is that our customers are able to submit a solar application and pay the Interconnection Fee whenever it’s convenient for them, day or night,” said Stephen Johnston, business project manager who helped to create the new online payment options.

The Interconnection fee is a one-time fee that covers the costs that we incur for connecting solar installations to the gird safely and reliably. If customers have an existing PayPay account, they can use their PayPal account or link to their banking account to pay the interconnection fee. Braintree allows users to pay directly with a credit card.

In addition, the online payment options are available for customers who wish to purchase SDG&E’s patented Renewable Meter Adapter, which simplifies solar interconnection to the grid by eliminating the need for costly panel upgrades.

More Information

The online payment options were part an ongoing commitment by SDG&E to improve customer service for solar interconnections. Previously, we had implemented a Fast Track Process for systems that are under 30kW.
