Construction Update: Sycamore to Peñasquitos Transmission Project

At SDG&E, enhancing the power grid is just one way we are working to becoming the cleanest, safest, most reliable energy company in America. With that in mind, we are currently making improvements to infrastructure throughout our service territory that will improve reliability, enhance safety and help us build healthier communities. As we do this work, we want to ensure we are providing you with updates on projects that may affect you and your community.

Construction continues on Sycamore to Peñasquitos Project

Day work along Pomerado Road near Marshall Middle School and night work in the community of Mira Mesa is ongoing. Plans to complete a majority of work near Marshall Middle School by Friday, August 26 to coincide with the start of the new school year remains on schedule.

Last week, we made significant progress by setting new electric vaults and completing additional trench work along Pomerardo Road between Spring Canyon Road and Stonebridge Parkway. As work progresses,  activities will move north-east along Pomerado Road and onto Stonebridge Parkway, ultimately connecting with the overhead portion of the project

Efforts to reduce traffic delays

To reduce traffic impacts during weekday commutes, electric vault work will take place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This change in schedule will not only reduce traffic delays, but will also accelerate the completion schedule for this portion of the project.

On the east end of the project,  construction started on a half-a-mile of new overhead 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line and a relocated 138 kV power line. This work will require five new transmission structures within the existing Sycamore Canyon Substation and a trail originating near Stonebridge Parkway. On the west end of the project, overhead construction will include one new cable pole near the intersection of Carroll Canyon Road and Interstate 805. Helicopters will be used during this portion of construction to support activities along the two overhead sections.

We appreciate the feedback from residents that resulted in additional safety measures throughout the community. We have increased signage along Pomerado Road to urge commuters to use caution and decrease speeds while traveling over trench plates. Cones have also been added near the traffic alert signage to enhance visibility. Safety continues to be our number one priority and we are making every effort to protect our customers, our employees and our communities.
